龍樹破「修福」者 Nagarjuna Broke Up [Auspiciousness] Cultivators

天竺十四祖龍樹大士,得了十三祖迦毘摩羅付法之外,便至南天竺弘法。
After 14th Patriarch, Nagarjuna received Dharma from13th Patriarch Kapimala, he subsequently went to South India to propagate dharma.


南天竺的國人,太半以修「福」為主,所謂修行,就是「做善事」了。
People in South India, more than half cultivate [Auspiciousness] mainly, and cultivation to them is just [doing charity or kind deeds].

龍樹大士為他們說法。
Nagarjuna expound dharma to them.

有修福者,質問龍樹:「人有福報,世間第一。徒言佛性,有誰能見?」
The Auspiciousness cultivator, questioned Nagarjuna: People have Auspicious Rewards, topmost in the world. You talked about Buddha Nature, who can see it?

龍樹說:「汝欲見佛性,先須除我慢。」
Nagarjuna said: If you want to see Buddha Nature, need to get rid of own Pride first.

修福者問:「佛性大小?」
The Auspiciousness cultivator asked: Buddha nature is big or small?

龍樹說:「非大非小,非廣非狹。無福無報,不死不生。」
Nagarjuna said: Not big nor small, not wide not narrow. no auspiciousness nor rewards/retribution, no death nor birth.

修福者折服。
The Auspiciousness cultivator, was impressed.

龍樹大士為度化這些人,施展神通,現如滿月之輪,清淨湛然。
Nagarjuna in attempting to succour these people, exhibited Astral Abilities by transforming the wheel of a Full Moon, clean pure tranquil.

其中,龍樹的首座弟子「迦那提婆」,謂大眾說:「識此相否?」
In their midst, Kanadeva, Nagarjuna’s top disciple, spoke to the crowd: Know this Form?

大眾答:「目所未?,安能辨識?」
Crowd answered: Never seen before, how to explain?

提婆說:「這是大士現佛性體相,以示我等。何以知之,因其無相三昧,形如滿月,佛性之義,廓然虛明。」
Deva said: This is Great Teacher showing a form of Buddha Nature, to show us. How to know this, because his formless Samadhi, shaped as Full Moon, the meaning of Buddha Nature, solitary yet pure and bright.

龍樹大士復本相,說偈:「身現圓月相,以表諸佛體。說法無其形,用辨非聲色。」
Nagarjuna returned to original form, said this verse: 
Body exhibit Full Moon form, to represent all Buddhas’ body.
Expounding Dharma without their forms, explaining not sound nor form.

最後,龍樹大士付法給上首弟子「迦那提婆」。
At last, Nagarjuna transmitted this verse to his top student [Kandeva].

付法偈曰:Verse for Dharma transmission:

「為明隱顯法。Only understanding invisible and visible dharma.
方說解脫理。Then can expound break free theory.
於法心不證。Pertaining to Dharma, Heart is not affirmed.
無瞋亦無喜。」No aversion nor like.

在這裡,我要告訴大家,到了今天,談到修行,許多人都會說:

At this point, I tell all of you, to this day, when talking about cultivation, lots of people will say:

「我心好,就好了!」
My Heart is good (Kind), thats good enough!

「修行,就是做善事,就對了!」
Cultivation, is just doing charity or kind deeds, that right already!

這二句話,至今仍然盛行。
These 2 statements, till now still widely proliferate.


我不敢說,這兩句話,有什麼不對,「心好」、「做善事」,正是做人的根本,升天的根本,至天堂的根本。不管任何宗教,均以「心好」、「做善事」為根本第一。
I dare not say, these 2 statements have any error, [Heart is good] , [do kind deeds], is exactly the basic of being a human being, rise to heaven’s root. No matter which religion, all base on [good heart], [do kind deeds] as the first base.

佛教亦言:「諸惡莫做,眾善奉行。」也!
Buddhism has this saying: Do not do all bad/evil deeds, respectful towards good/kind deeds.

然而,「心好」、「做善事」,是有形的。
However, [Good Heart], [Do kind deeds], have forms.

一般,以為「心好」、「做善事」就是功德很大了,但是,他們不知道,「心好」、「做善事」,就如同一粒沙,彈入一座山。
Most perceived that [good heart], [do kind deeds], means great merits, but they do not know that [good heart] , [doing kind deeds], is just like a grain of sand sprung into a mountain.
這是我常常用的比喻。
This is how I usually illustrate my point.

以今天的宇宙觀而言:
With today’s Universal view as example:


地球如一粒沙。
Global earth is just like a grain of sand.

汝善事再大,仍然在沙中。在一粒沙中,做善事。

No matter how big is your kind deeds, still a grain inside the whole sand pit.
Doing kind deeds within a grain of sand.

所以,做善事,要以無功德想,才是長養「菩提心」的方法。
Therefore, doing kind deeds, need to perceive as No merits, then is method of growing and nurturing [Boddhicitta].
也即是:「所謂功德,就是沒有功德,才是功德。」
That is to say: Speaking about merits, is then no merits, then is merits.
( Lotuschef : Hahaha! Sounds familiar? This is similar to Buddha’s teachings in Diamond Sutra!)


大家可以想一想,中國有五千年的歷史,其中慈善家不在少數,我們今天看看,他們的功德也是無形的。You all ponder on this, in 5000 years of China’s history. charitable people are not few, let us see today, their merits are formless.

有形的功德,何存?梁武帝蕭衍自以為功德甚大,如今他的有形功德何存?
Merit with form, still exist? Emperor Lain Wu Ti, Xiao Yan, thinks that his merits are pretty big, at this moment does his merits’ form still exist?


我實實在在的告訴大家:「功德無形、無相。」
I truly tell you all: Merit is shapeless, formless.

龍樹大士現出淨月輪相,以表佛性。
Nagajuna exhibit pure moon chakra form to show Buddha Nature.
在密教的觀想之中,正是「月輪觀」,「月輪」就代表了佛性,因為除了「淨月輪」,佛性根本是無言無說的,是不可說的。
In Tantrayana’s visualization, this is exactly [ Moon chakra visualization], [Moon Chakra] thus represent Buddha Nature, because other than [Pure Moon Chakra], Buddha Nature is basically without description, is cannot speak of.

我當然明白「淨月輪」是無相三昧的表徵。
Of course, I understand [Pure Moon Chakra] represents Formless Samadhi.

我若坐法座之上,不言不語。
If I sit upon the dharma throne and maintain speechless.

請大家告訴我,佛性是什麼?是什麼?
Please can all of you to tell me, what is Buddha nature? What is it?
