袈裟一角 A Corner of a Kasaya



Note: Buddha’s Kasaya is not the elaborate ones that we have now, and lord knows who “designed” & “devised” it this way. 
Also, lord knows who stipulated that this worldly designed drape, is compulsory!
O! There were some interesting statements too, which were circulating about the use and the ceremonial “correctness” of the Kasaya’s use!


Isn’t sentient beings very great in “creating” more suffering for self?
Hahaha!
O! the penalties too that will be mete out to “offenders” too!

蓮生活佛著作盧勝彥文集184_給你點上心燈

世尊成道後,在「屍陀林」中一樹下跏趺而坐。
After Enlightenment, Supreme one of the World, (Sakyamuni Buddha), sat crossed legs under a tree in Sltavana.


有二商人以五百乘車經過林畔,有二車牛不肯前進。
2 merchants with 500 carts passed by the side of this forest, 2 bullocks refused to move forward.

商人乃訝,見之山神。

Merchants were surprised, and sought out Mountain Deity.

報曰:「林中有聖人成道,經逾四十九日未食,汝當供養。」
Report said: There is an Enlightened holy or saintly one within, 49 days have passed and still have not partaken any food, you should go gift offering.

商人入林,果見一人端然不動,乃問曰:「為是梵王耶?帝釋耶?山神耶?河神耶?」
Upon entering this forest, the merchants surely see a person that is dignified and unmoving, then they asked: Are you Brahma? Indra? Mountain Deity? River Deity?


世尊微笑,舉袈裟角示之。
The Supreme one of the World smiled, lifted a corner of his Kasaya to show these merchants.

商人頂禮,遂陳供養。
The merchants pay respect/homage, and hurriedly presented offering.

這段文字的重點在:「袈裟一角。」
This passage’s important point is : [ A corner of a Kasaya].

什麼是「袈裟」?
What is [Kasaya]?

袈裟是行者的衣服,又叫「無垢衣」、「離塵衣」、「蓮花衣」、「痟瘦衣」。
(痟瘦指煩惱痟瘦)
Kasaya is clothes of a cultivator or yogi, also called [No dirt/pollutants clothing; leave sentient dust behind clothing; lotus clothing; slimming clothing. (Slimming as in slimming down Suffering from world matters).

袈裟又稱「出世服」、「忍辱鎧」。
Kasaya is also called [Leave world clothing]; [Perseverance Armour].

我們又稱「福田衣」。

We also call [Auspicious Field clothing].

袈裟有五德,見悲華經:

Kasaya has 5 virtues, see Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka-sūtram:

一、或犯重邪見之四眾,以一念敬心尊重袈裟,必於三乘受記。
1. or committed severe Evil views upon four groups of disciples [comprising bhikshus, bhikshunis, upāsakas, upasikas], with One thought of Respectful heart or mindset upon the Kasaya, surely will receive the Buddha’s 3-yanas endorsement in the following lifetime.
二、天龍人鬼若恭敬袈裟少分,即得三乘不退。
Heavenly dragon, sentient being, ghost, if respect a little of the Kasaya, will immediately receive the non-receding 3-yanas.

三、若鬼神諸人得袈裟少分,乃至四寸,則飲食充足。
If ghost or deity, all beings receive a little of the Kasaya, to the extend of 4 inches, will have food & drink in abundance.

四、眾生共違反,念袈裟便生悲心。
All beings repel together, upon thought of Kasaya, compassionate heart will be born.

五、若在兵陳持此少分,恭敬尊重,常得勝他。
If soldiers and armies hold this a little, revere & respectful, will always have victories.

袈裟有十利:The Kasaya has 10 benefits:

「一、慚愧。Shame
二、離寒熱。Away from Cold & Hot
三、示沙門。Exhibit Samana
四、人天寶幢。Human & heavenly precious banner
五、滅諸罪。Eliminates all sins
六、不貪欲。No greedy desire
七、佛淨衣。Buddha’s pure clothes
八、生十善。Develop 10 kindness 
九、長菩提。Grow Bodhi (means wisdom)
十、無煩惱。No Suffering」

我們密教在修法中,如果右手執「袈裟一角」,左手結「指示印」,即表示是「法印」也。可?令天下鬼神,皆來聽令。
We in Tantrayana cultivation, if can use Right hand to hold a corner of the Kasaya, Left hand form [execute order] mudra, which is a [Dharma mudra]. Can order all ghosts and deities, to come and to listen to order.

我們密教修「護摩」(火供),以手珠作「轉珠明」,而受本尊加持,加持後,手珠觸袈裟,表示一切清淨清淨了。
In Tantrayana’s Fire Offering, with hand beads performing [Turning Beads Bright], receiving Principal Yidam’s blessing, after blessing, beads touch Kasaya, means all cleanse and pure already.

昔日,商人入林,見佛陀端坐。
商人問:「是大梵天嗎?是帝釋天嗎?是山神嗎?是河神嗎?」

Next day, merchants entering this forest, see Buddha siting there dignified and unmoving.
Merchants asked: Are you Brahma? Indra? Mountain Deity? River Deity?

世尊微笑。

Buddha smiled.

以「袈裟角」示之。

Using the Kasaya to show.

商人就明白,並供養之。

Merchants understood, and give offering.

在表面上看來,世尊出示「袈裟角」,是表示,我是一個清淨的修行人,也即是聖賢僧,是覺者,是聖人。

On the surface, World Supreme One show Kasaya to signify, I am a pure cultivator, also a Sangha, an awakened one, a Saint.

表徵「南無佛、南無法、南無僧。」
Signifying [Namo Buddha, Namo Dharma, Namo Sangha.]


於是商人就供養了。
Thus the merchants gave offering.

在深意來說:世尊出示「袈裟一角」。
大家試參看看,這裏面有更大的玄機所在!是何玄機?

除了「應供」之外,還有什麼?
Other than [Offering upon request], what else?

我現在問你,除了「應供」之外,還有什麼更深的玄機?參!參!參!

I ask you now, other than [Offering upon request], what else is the greater secret-key?
Go figure!

如果我是那位商人,我先供養佛陀。
If I am the merchant, I would first give offering to Buddha.


供養完畢後,我即頂禮佛陀,而立在佛陀的左右,也不出聲。
Then I would pay homage, following that, I will stand to Buddha’s left or right and remain silent.

等世尊問:「明白嗎?」
When World Supreme One ask: [Understand?]

我答:「明白。」
I will reply: [Understand].

於是,我就跟?佛陀出家去了。
Then, I will follow Buddha and be ordained.
也?上了袈裟,這是無上的福報,不只是人天供養而已了。
Also put on Kasaya, this is unsurpass auspicious meritorious reward, not only limited to receiving Human & Heavenly offering.

人若問我:「袈裟一角到底有什麼?」

People ask me: A corner of the Kasaya basically have what?

我答:「袈裟一角可以藏身。」

I replied: Can hide self.

如果今天,有人問我,佛法到底的「要旨」是什麼?

If some one ask me today, What is the Key-message in Buddha Dharma?
什麼是「明心見性」?
What is [Comprehend Heart sighting nature]?

我舉「袈裟一角」示之。

I would raise a corner of Kasaya to answer them.
